Vico Magistretti

Vico Magistretti diseñador italiano

Vico Magistretti, Italian industrial designer and architect, is one of the leading figures in 20th century industrial furniture design and one of the main architects of the expansion of Italian design around the world.

Born in Milan in 1920, he graduated in architecture and although he devoted decades to this work, he oriented his activity towards the field of industrial design.

From the 1960s onwards, Magistretti combined his successful architectural career with the production of various industrial design objects, focusing on the mass production of lighting and furniture.

The possibility of reaching as many people as possible and offering affordable prices led him to explore all the possibilities of a new material at the time: plastic, being recognised as the first designer to produce furniture with this material.

His designs can be found in such prominent firms as Artemide, Cassina, Gavina, De Padova, Fritz Hansen, Kartell and Oluce.

Vico Magistretti has always been interested in serial design, mass production, the product intended for a wide audience: producing furniture for everyone.

He was a curious, eccentric and inspiring character for Italian design. During his career he designed some 120 products, 80% of which are still in production.

His career has been recognised with numerous international awards.

After his death in September 2006, at the age of 85, the studio, home to the Vico Magistretti Foundation, became a museum dedicated to the study and dissemination of his work, which is present all over the world.
