Biography

Motoko Ishii, a lighting designer, was born in Japan in 1938. For her "light is life" and she has dedicated her life to fulfilling the desire to "show the beauty of light to as many people as possible". A pioneer in her field, she has pushed the boundaries of lighting design in urban, architectural, reference and environmental lighting. Famous for her artistry as well as her achievements beyond the scope of her lighting projects.

She managed to break into the male-dominated architectural community in Japan, which at the time did not welcome women in the industry. Not only did she break the mould, but she also became a dominant authority in the architectural lighting design industry.

A childhood interest in mechanical things and a desire to become an industrial designer led her to study design at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo, later working in Finland and Germany. In 1968, she established Lighting Design, a company that has realised hundreds of innovative projects all over the world. She was one of the first designers to use coloured light in outdoor applications.

One of his major projects was the lighting design for Expo 70 in Osaka. From the 1980s onwards, he produced designs for a number of major projects: the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (the world's longest suspension bridge), the historic Shirakawago World Heritage Site, Tokyo Station, Tokyo Tower, laser art performances in Vienna and Brussels and a production of Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Harmony with nature is central to its eco-friendly lighting systems, often designed to revitalise structures and enhance spaces. Lighting considered from the point of view of culture, not technology.

In 2018 he was commissioned to renovate the entire lighting of the Tour Eiffel. Internationally recognised and award-winning, his designs are still highly prized by collectors and design lovers, although it is often not easy to get one of them.
