Massimo and Lella Vignelli

Massimo y Lella Vignelli diseñadores italianos

Massimo Vignelli, considered a precursor of modernist design, was born in 1931 in Milan and studied Art and Architecture in Milan and Venice. He began his personal career specialising in graphic design for the creation of products and corporate identities. At the end of 1950 he was awarded a scholarship to study in the United States. In 1957 he married Lella Vignelli, with whom, years later, he founded the company Vignelli Associates. He had a very clear philosophy of life which was "If you can design one thing, you can design everything". His designs are characterised by timelessness, functionality and elegance, always avoiding excessive ornamentation.

In 1967 Massimo and Lella founded Unimark, a company that quickly became a world leader in design. Logos such as American Airlines, Knoll, Benetton, Pirelli, the signage for the New York underground map, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, etc., are among his many and renowned works.
He worked in many different design disciplines: graphic, interior, product, packaging, furniture, jewellery...

He is credited with some of the most widely used and well-known typefaces such as Times Roman, Futura, Bodoni and Helvetica.
In addition to being the art director for all his companies, he also wrote a book entitled: Vignelli, from A to Z. And in 2009 he launched "The Vignelli Canon", a free e-book, with his basic design principles, in order to inspire young designers.

Today, the University of Louisiana has a Vignelli Archive building, where the entire legacy of a designer who did not abandon pencil and paper until the day of his death in 2014 is gathered.

His legacy continues to this day to be a point of reference in the world of design nowadays.
