Afra & Tobia Scarpa

Afra y Tobia Scarpa diseñadores italianos

Tobia Scarpa, Italian architect and designer, was born in Venice in 1935. Together with Afra Bianchin, his wife and also an architect, they formed one of the best-known professional partnerships. They began their joint career in the late 1950s working as designers at the Murano Venini glass factory.

In 1960 they opened their own design office in Italy and were involved in the creation of the company Flos.

One of their first designs for the industry was the "Bastiano" sofa (1961) for Gavina, and one of their most notable works of that time was the "Coronado" sofa (1966) for B&B Italia.

In 1964 they collaborated with Benetton to design their first textile factory.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa are a benchmark in contemporary design and their works resonate strongly in the work and inspiration of mass-produced pieces.

In 2002 Tobia Scarpa started teaching at the Design Department of the University of Venice.

His professional history is replete with awards and recognitions as his work, coherent and constantly at the service of beauty, has written the history of Italian design.

Throughout his career T.Scarpa worked with the motto "design is a profession without a rule book... what remains is that final and concrete result: the object".

His pieces can be found in museums in the United States and Europe, including collections at MoMA and the Louvre Museum.
