Pipistrello table lamp, designed by Gae Aulenti for Martinelli Luce, 1965. The diffuser is made of opal white methacrylate, shaped like the spread wings of a bat, from which it takes its name.
The lamp was originally designed to furnish Olivetti’s shops in Paris and Buenos Aires, integrating into a spatial concept that Aulenti imagined as an indoor ‘Italian piazza’, halfway between a column, a street lamp and a sculpture.
Its great innovation is the telescopic stem, which allows the height to be adjusted so that it can function as a table or floor lamp, as required.
Its sculptural form combines a very stable conical base with a wavy shade that diffuses the light in a soft and enveloping way. A mixture of curved lines and clean volumes that creates an elegant piece even when switched off.
A design icon that will catch everyone’s eye.
This piece shows no obvious signs of use.
